Bears Sweep Double Header With Screaming Eagles

Pikeville, Ky. - UPIKE took the series against Toccoa Falls after sweeping today's double header with the Screaming Eagles. 

Game 1 - UPIKE 8, Toccoa Falls 7 (10 innings)

The Screaming Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the third, but their lead did not last long. Noah Helton tied the score with a two-out double, then scored when Cam Revolt hit a double to take the lead. Greg Lile extended UPIKE's lead to 3-1 with an RBI double to close out the third. In the fifth, UPIKE loaded the bases then took a 4-1 lead after Toccoa Falls walked in a run. The Bears added two more runs in the fifth when Tyler Freas scored on a sac fly and Connor Moody scored on a wild pitch. 

The Screaming Eagles scored three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-4. In the bottom of the inning, Noah Helton crossed home plate to go up 7-4. A half inning later, Toccoa Falls tacked on three more runs to knot the score at 7-7. Neither team would score in the eighth or ninth innings, but the Bears did key a stop from Ethan Cernohous. Cernohous and the UPIKE defense stranded two Screaming Eagles in the top of the ninth. 

Extra innings were necessary after the Bears were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth. Ethan Cernohous came up huge again in the tenth, retiring Toccoa Falls in order. Cernohous' play allowed for an incredible ending. With one out and a full count in the bottom of the tenth, Noah Helton homered to give the Bears an 8-7 win, their first of the 2023 season. 

 

Game 2 - UPIKE 9, Toccoa Falls 4 (6 innings)

After claiming their first win of the season, the Bears got after it again in game two. After the Screaming Eagles tacked on a run in the first, the Bears responded with four of their own. Neither team would score again until the Bears found themselves in some trouble with two outs in the fourth. The Screaming Eagles got a pair of runners on, then tied the game with a three run shot to left field. 

Neither team scored again until the Bears offense went to work in the bottom of the fifth. UPIKE loaded the bases, then Samuel Torres hit an RBI single to put the Bears up 5-4. Shortly after, Tyler Maynard knocked in three more runs with the bases loaded. UPIKE added one more run when Kyle Williams hit a ball to the gap in left center, scoring Maynard and giving UPIKE a 9-4 lead. The game would end at 9-4 and UPIKE took the win and the series.

The Bears improved to 2-2 following today's wins and will be back in action at Johnson University on Tuesday afternoon.
