Pikeville, Ky. - The Bears run-ruled the Johnson University Royals, 20-7 en route to their third consecutive win at Johnnie Lemaster Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Bears' bats stayed hot early in the bottom of the first. Kyle Williams drove in Ryan Sartin then Noah Helton cleared the bases with a three-run blast to left field to put UPIKE up 4-0. Helton's homer was his fourth of the season. Two innings later, Helton crossed the plate when Greg Lile singled into right field to put UPIKE up 6-0.
Johnson got back in the game in the fourth, scoring four runs after loading the bases. That was as close as they would get, however, as the UPIKE offense exploded in the next frame. The Bears hung 12 runs on the Royals in the bottom of the fourth. UPIKE's fourth inning onslaught began with Ryan Sartin scoring off an error. Shortly after, Tyler Maynard scored when Noah Helton singled into center for his second hit of the game. Cam Revolt tacked on two more with a double, then crossed home plate shortly after on an errant throw to go up 11-4.
UPIKE continued to pour it on the Royals when Samuel Torres hit a double, scoring Tyler Freas. Demarco Miller pinch ran for Torres then scored on a sac-fly by Tyler Maynard. Kyle Williams, who went 4-4 with four runs and three RBIs, singled to right field, scoring Noah Brooks to put the Bears up 14-4. The Royals walked in a run then Kyle Williams scored on a wild pitch. The Bears tacked on two more runs off a walk and an error. After all the fourth inning dust had settled, the Bears led 18-4.
The Bears tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 20-4. Johnson added two in the top of the sixth and one in the top of the seventh. Leading 20-7, junior pitcher Cody Morton ended the game with a strikeout to cap off the run-rule.
Noah Helton is today's player of the game. Helton, fresh off earning Mid-South Conference Baseball Player of the Week honors, went 2-2 with a home run, four RBIs, stole two bases, drew three walks and scored four runs.
UPIKE's record climbs to 3-2 (0-0 MSC) following today's convincing win over the Royals. Coach Cody Andreychuk's squad will be back at the Johnny this Saturday for a double header against Lourdes University.
