Pikeville, Ky. - Coach Robert Staggs' squad opened their 2023 season with two home wins over Trinity International Sunday at Paul Butcher Field.
Game 1: UPIKE 6, Trinity International 0
Carolyn Alincic got the start on the hill for the Bears but ran into some trouble early. The Trojans had two runners in scoring position with no outs, but the Bears' defense swung the momentum by shutting the door on TIU and allowing no runs.
In the bottom of the first, the Bears kept the momentum going when Zoe Ingram hit a solo home run into left center field. Two innings later, Ingram belted another solo shot to deep center to put UPIKE up 2-0.
While the Bears' defense continued to dominate, the offense put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth. It started when Katelyn Byrd scored on an RBI single by Jamie Pollard. Karsen Pritchard tacked on two more with a two-RBI single. Pritchard would score shortly after when Sam Case singled to center field.
Carolyn Alincic pitched a complete game shutout, striking out ten and recording her first win of the season. UPIKE took game one 6-0.
Game 2: UPIKE 10, Trinity International 2 (5 innings)
Kelsie Hardester dominated on the mound and at the plate in game two. After pitching a scoreless top of the first, Hardester drove in a pair of runs after doubling into deep center field. Kendall Hillard added a third run in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice groundout.
The Trojans tacked on a pair of runs in the second to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Bears blew the game open in the next frame. Lillie Kluesner hit an RBI single and then scored after Clara Blair singled into left field. Shortly after, Madison Mullins came up with the bases loaded. Mullins hit a three-run double to put UPIKE up 9-2. Two innings later, Mullins made it 10-2 after a sac fly.
After Kelsie Hardester pitched a scoreless top of the fifth, the Bears run-ruled the Trojans and swept the double header. Hardester got her first win on the mound this season, allowing two runs off four hits and striking out three.
UPIKE is 2-0 on the year and will be back in action Thursday for a double header with Bluefield University at Paul Butcher Field.
