PIKEVILLE, Ky. - The No. 25 University of Pikeville women's basketball team saw its modest two-game losing streak come to an end with a 55-43 win over Lindsey Wilson College on Thursday night.
Pikeville, which improved to 19-6 on the season and 14-5 in the Mid-South Conference, picked up the win despite shooting only 37.04 percent (20-of-54) from the floor, thanks largely to holding the Blue Raiders to 19-of-57 (33.33 percent) from the field.
Another advantage for the Bears was turning the ball over a mere three times in the entire contest.
The game was low-scoring throughout. The Bears got a basket with 55 seconds left in the opening period to take a 9-7 lead to the second period. The layup broke open the only tie of the contest.
Leading 11-10 early in the second frame, the Bears put together an 8-2 run that ended when graduate student Mary Englert hit from just inside the arc with 4:24 left in the half. It pushed the Bears advantage to 19-12.
The lead was 24-20 at halftime.
In the third period, graduate student Sierra Feltner turned in a three-point play with 3:05 left to push the lead to double digits for the first time at 34-24 with 3:05 left.
Those would be the final points of the frame for the Bears. Lindsey Wilson would score the final six of the period, all by Alera Barbee, and pull back within four (34-30) heading into the final period.
Any momentum the Blue Raiders had would end early in the final quarter. Englert scored from the elbow to begin an 11-5 stretch to begin the period, a run that would end when she hit a three from the right wing to make it 45-35 with 4:37 left.
The biggest lead of the night came at the end.
Freshman Allie Stone had 14 points to pace the Bears, while Englert finished with 12 and a team-high eight rebounds.
The other three starters – Feltner, junior Morgan Stamper and senior Bailey Frazier – all finished with nine rebounds.
Lindsey Wilson (10-15, 4-15) got 12 points each from Barbee and Lucy Patterson, who added a game-high nine rebounds.
