Pikeville, Ky. - The Bears fell short in their Mid-South Conference opener, falling 5-2 to the #22 Campbellsville Tigers at Bob Amos.
Doubles:
Juan Diego Alzate and Mirko Dedich were defeated 6-7 by Campbellsville after losing 5-7 in the tiebreaker. Valentin Ortiz tied the team doubles score at 1-1 with a dominant, 6-1 win. The Tigers rebounded with a 6-2 set win to take the team doubles point.
Singles:
UPIKE got off to a hot start in the singles matches. Valentin Ortiz won 6-2 and 6-1 over his CU opponent for the 2-0 win. Juan Diego Alzate followed up Ortiz's performance with a 7-5, 6-4 sweep to put UPIKE up 2-1 overall. The Tigers battled back, winning the next two singles matches 2-0. UPIKE put up a great fight but the Tigers ultimately took this one 5-2.
The Bears are now 3-3 (0-1 MSC) following Thursday evening's result. UPIKE will hit the road for west Tennessee for a Saturday afternoon Mid-South matchup with the Bethel Wildcats.
