Pikeville, Ky. - After splitting games one and two on Saturday with Lindsey Wilson, the Bears took the series with a 13-3 win over the Blue Raiders Sunday afternoon.
Ryan Ratliff retired the first two LWC batters he faced then walked the next two. The Blue Raiders took a 1-0 lead after a single to right.
Neither team scored again until the Bears tied the score in the third. Tyler Freas got it started with a walk. Samuel Torres advanced Freas from first to second, who then made a fantastic heads-up play to advance to third with no one guarding the base. The Blue Raiders committed an error in attempting to throw Freas out at third, allowing the junior from Woodstock, Ga. to score.
The Blue Raiders committed two errors in the fourth, leading to Tyler Maynard reaching base then scoring. One frame later, Lindsey Wilson retook the lead after a two out, two-run single to go up 3-2.
After Ty Crall pitched a scoreless top of the sixth, UPIKE's offense went to work. Tyler Maynard got the inning started with a single to left, then Noah Helton was hit by a pitch. Greg Lile, the hero in game two, loaded the bases with a single to right. UPIKE took the lead after Noah Brooks and Tyler Freas were both hit by pitches. With the bases loaded and no one out, Samuel Torres put the Bears up three with a two-run single to center.
Kyle Williams made it 8-3 with a two-run single then crossed the plate after a hit by Tyler Maynard. Maynard then put UPIKE up 10-3 after scoring from first after a single by Noah Helton. Greg Lile capped off a nine-run bottom of the sixth with a single to left center, scoring Noah Helton and giving the Bears a commanding, 11-3 lead.
Neither team plated any runs in the seventh, giving the Bears a chance to run-rule LWC in the eighth. Kyle Williams led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to center. Williams then stole both second and third with Tyler Mayanrd at the dish. Williams scored after a sacrifice fly to center field by Maynard. Noah Helton walked then advanced to second after a single by Greg Lile. With two on and one out, freshman Noah Brooks came to the plate with a chance to end it. Brooks came through with a double to left, scoring Helton and giving the Bears a 13-3 win.
With today's win, the Bears captured their first Mid-South Conference series victory of the year. UPIKE is now 10-15 (4-8 MSC) and will take on the Midway Eagles Tuesday afternoon at Johnnie Lemaster Field.
