Late RBI Sinks Bears At JU

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Johnson (Tenn.) University scored a single run in the ninth inning to knock off the University of Pikeville 7-6 on Tuesday afternoon. 

UPIKE (18-19) led at one point 5-3 and had tied the game at six with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth before letting it slip away.  

The Bears had nine hits on the day, with shortstop Kyle Williams claiming three of them, including one of four doubles for the team. Right fielder Noah Helton had two hits including a double. He scored two runs, drove in one and swiped three bases on a day his team was credited with seven.  

Left fielder Noah Brooks also had two hits, including a two-bagger. Centerfielder Demarco Miller had a double while designated hitter Greg Lile singled, drove in one and scored one. Lile also walked three times in the game.  

Freshman Jake Biggs got the start for the Bears, throwing the first six innings. He struck out seven and walked one while pitching around eight hits.  

Junior Grayson Harris (1-3) pitched the final 2-1/3 innings, recording one strikeout with no walks.  

The Royals had 13 hits in the win and used five hurlers on the day.  

The Bears will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they host regional rival Alice Lloyd College. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Johnnie LeMaster Field in Pikeville.
