COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of Pikeville got exactly what it needed on Saturday afternoon, ending a three-game losing streak with a 90-34 win over Columbia International (S.C.) University.
The win saw eight players score at least eight points, 12 made three-pointers by halftime and another milestone for a veteran Bear.
Pikeville led 3-2 early on before taking full command of the game. The Bears scored 18 of the next 20 points in the next 6 minutes.
It began with consecutive threes by senior
Julia Parker and sophomore
Allie Stone. After Stone hit another jumper, sophomore
India Blyth nailed a three to make it 14-2.
Mariah Leinbach scored for the Rams to interrupt things before the Bears cranked it back up. Stone hit a jumper, freshman
Rachel Bush scored inside and Stone nailed a three.
The sophomore had 13 points by this point in the game, which came with 2:16 left in the opening period, and the Bears were on top 21-4.
The quarter ended with senior
Bailey Birchfield nailing consecutive three-pointers, giving UPike a 27-7 lead.
Leading 40-15 late in the half, the Bears closed it out on a mission. Graduate student
Bailey Frazier, who pulled down her 500
th career rebound at the 4-minute mark of the quarter, hit a three-pointer. Back-to-back buckets by Bush followed, and when Stone hit a three-pointer with 37 seconds left, the Bears took a 50-15 lead to the break.
Stone led all scorers with 18 points, going 4-of-8 from the arc. Parker, who was 4-of-5 from the arc for 12 points, joined her in double figures.
Birchfield, Blyth, Bush,
Bailey Frazier,
Brooklyn Frazier and Stamper all had eight points for the Bears. Stamper had 13 rebounds and three assists while Blyth led the team with six assists.
Leinbach was the only Ram in double figures, scoring 10. The home team made only 22.0 (13-of-59) from the field on the day.
The Bears will be back in action on Wednesday evening, hosting Union College. The AAC game will be played at Appalachian Wireless Arena at 5:30 p.m.
