ATHENS, Tenn. - UPIKE volleyball was defeated 3-1 by Tennessee Wesleyan Tuesday night.
Set 1: TWU 25, UPIKE 15
After an attacking error by the Bulldogs, the Bears trailed just 7-6 early in set one. The Bulldogs responded with an 8-1 run and took control of the set. TWU took set one 25-25 and led the match 1-0.
Set 2: UPIKE 25, TWU 18
After the Bulldogs went on an 8-1 run in set one, the Bears returned the favor early in the second. The Bears scored eight of the first nine points. Tennessee Wesleyan countered with 9-3 run to cut the lead to 12-10, but the Bears slammed the door on their comeback bid. Leading 14-12, the Bears went on a 4-0 run led by kills from Lanie Hawley and Olivia Chapman. UPIKE closed out the match on a 4-0 run after three kills from Alondra Ayende and one from Tylie Barton to tie the match at 1-1.
Set 3: TWU 27, UPIKE 25
UPIKE and Tennessee Wesleyan split the first 20 points of set three. Late in the set, the Bulldogs went on a 3-0 run to go ahead 22-17. UPIKE responded with a 6-1 run to knot the score at 23-23. The Bulldogs scored the next point to go up 24-23, then Tylie Barton connected with Olivia Chapman to tie it at 24-24, then a bad set put the Bears ahead 25-24. The Bulldogs closed out the set with a 3-0 run to win set three 27-25and go ahead 2-1 in the match.
Set 4: TWU 25, UPIKE 13
The Bulldogs came out on fire in set four, scoring ten of the first 11 points. The Bears cut the lead to ten later in the set, but the early deficit proved to be too much to overcome. Tennessee Wesleyan took set four and took the match 3-1.
Alondra Ayende ed the Bears with 15 kills. Tylie Barton had a game-high 43 assists and was second with 14 digs. Ashtyn Filkins had a game-high 27 digs.
The Bears are 13-8 (8-5 AAC) following Tuesday's loss to TWU. UPIKE will return home Friday at 11:00 a.m. for a match with the Montreat Cavaliers.
