Bears get nice win over Montreat

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville began a busy two days with a 3-0 win over Montreat (N.C.) College on Friday morning.

The match was originally scheduled to be played tonight at Montreat, but the Cavaliers have been displaced due to the flooding after Hurricane Helene. Because the Bears are also scheduled to play Saturday morning at Brenau University in Gainesville, Ga., when the match was moved to Pikeville the start time on Friday was also adjusted.

Sophomore Lanie Hawley led the Bears on attack with 11 kills, while sophomore Alondra Ayende and freshman Cassidy Rivas had nine apiece. Freshman Olivia Chapman added six. Freshman setter Tylie Barton finished with 28 assists.

The defense at the net was paced by Hawley as well with three solo blocks. Ayende had one and two block assists, while Chapman and sophomore Theresa Romero had three block assists each.

Ayende and Barton both had 10 digs.

Montreat senior Kamryn Wolf, who leads the AAC in kills per set, was injured in the first set and didn't return. He had two kills at the time of her injury.

Pikeville will take a 13-8 record into their match with Brenau on Saturday and stands 8-5 in the conference.

Montreat fell to 7-2, both overall and in the league.

Bears 25, Cavaliers 15: Montreat opened with the first two points, but the Bears quickly matched them. The Cavs went up 3-2 on an attack error, but UPike scored eight of the next 10 points to take the lead. Rivas had two kills, Barton had one and Hawley recorded a service ace. Montreat cut it to two before the Bears scored five straight times, getting consecutive kills from Hawley to take a 17-10 lead. UPike scored the final five points thanks to back-to-back kills from Ayende.

Bears 25, Cavaliers 16: UPike jumped out to a 9-2 lead with two kills each by Hawley and Chapman. Leading 16-10, four straight kills – the first by Reagan Mullins and then three straight from Hawley – pushed it to 20-10. The Bears recorded 18 kills in this set alone.

Bears 25, Cavaliers 23: Holding a 10-8 lead, Montreat went on a 9-3 run to go up 19-11. The Bears then went on a 10-1 run, getting six points on Cav attack errors. Ayende had two kills, including the one to put the Bears on top 21-20. A block by Ayende and Mullins made it 24-22. The Cavs got a kill from junior Karly Horn to extend the match, but Ayende put it away with her ninth and final kill.
