Men's Soccer comeback falls short at CIU

COLUMBIA, S.C. - University of Pikeville men's soccer mounted a late comeback but were ultimately defeated 5-2 by Columbia International Wednesday afternoon.

Columbia International wasted no time getting their offense going. The Rams had a header attempt and a corner in the 2', then scored the first goal of the match in the 3'. CIU's Juan Jiminez connected with Florian Baumgaertner to give the Rams an early 1-0 lead. UPIKE's first shot of the match came off the foot of Tomas Cristancho in the 12', but Cristancho's bid went wide of the net.

Tomas Cristancho took the Bears' first corner kick of the match in the 37', but the Bears were unable to tie the score. Six minutes after Cristancho's corner, the Rams doubled their lead. CIU's Paul Schutte gives the Rams a 2-0 lead in the 43' off a feed from Pablo Porteno. The Rams took their 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

Just like CIU did in the first half, their offense got to work and scored early. Ive Celic connected with Rodrigo Cercal in the 50' to put CIU ahead 3-0. UPIKE had another corner kick opportunity in the 59'. Shortly after, Tomas Cristancho had the Bears' first shot on goal of the match, but CIU keeper Matias Breit made the save. UPIKE's next scoring chance came by way of a corner kick in the 63' but did not score. Three minutes later, Rodrigo Cercal scored his second goal of the match to put CIU up 4-0.

The Bears' next shot on goal got them on the scoreboard. Finn Wijnen connected with Bruno Arenal in the 76' for UPIKE's first goal of the match. The Bears turned up the heat and forced the Rams to take a penalty inside the 18-yard line, resulting in a penalty kick in the 78'. Bruno Arenal took the PK, which resulted in his second goal of the match to cut CIU's lead to 4-2. UPIKE's late comeback bid came to a halt when CIU's Noe Limas scored off a feed from Michael Abongo in the 89'. Limas's goal made it 5-2, which became the final score.

UPIKE drops to 1-9-1 (0-5-1 AAC) after Wednesday afternoon's result. Men's soccer will return to the pitch Saturday afternoon in Grayson, Ky., for a match with the KCU Knights at 3:30 p.m.
