Men's Soccer comes up short in final home match

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - UPIKE men's soccer was defeated 2-1 by Truett McConnell University in their final home match of the 2024 season.

Truett McConnell got the offense going early with three shot attempts (two on frame) and two corner kicks in the first three minutes of the match. UPIKE brought the ball back the other way and had their first shot on goal in the 13' off the foot of Anthony Aguilar. Shortly after Aguilar's shot on frame, Jay Jackson had a header attempt go just over the net.

Later in the half, the Bears got the ball deep into TMU territory and drew a corner kick in the 31'. Bruno Arenal took the corner kick and connected with Juan Farkas. Farkas's header attempt landed in the back of the net and put UPIKE ahead 1-0.

Nine minutes after Juan Farkas gave UPIKE a 1-0 lead, TMU leveled the score. TMU's Hendrik Metje scored the game-tying goal in the 40' and the teams went to the halftime break tied 1-1. Truett McConnell held a 6-3 advantage in shot attempts in the first 45.

Truett McConnell used the momentum they gained with the late first-half goal to get the offense going early in the second half. In the 52', TMU had an excellent scoring chance that was saved by Bears keeper Adam Di Millo. TMU kept the ball in the attacking zone and took the lead in the 53' when Pablo Farrona scored off a feed from Gavin Eddy.

UPIKE's next great scoring chance came late in the contest when they drove deep into TMU territory. With two minutes left, Samuel Cristancho received a pass just outside the box and fired a shot on frame, but his bid was snuffed out by TMU keeper Euan Brindley. That was UPIKE's last great scoring chance, and they fell 2-1 to TMU.

UPIKE finished the match with eight shot attempts, four of which were on frame. All eight shot attempts were by different players. In net, Adam Di Millo turned away ten of TMU's 12 shots on goal.

UPIKE is 3-12-2 (2-7-2 AAC) following Wednesday afternoon's result. Coach Oliver Hewitt-Fisher's team will hit the road Saturday for their final match of the season, a 5:00 p.m. tilt with Milligan University.
