Bears bested by Eagles

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - UPIKE volleyball was defeated 3-1 by Reinhardt in their last home game of the 2024 season.  

Set 1: Reinhardt 25, UPIKE 23 

UPIKE jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, but the Eagles countered with a 7-2 run to go up 9-8. Later, the Bears went on a 3-0 run to go ahead 21-19. Reinhardt came back with a 4-1 run to take a 23-22 lead. UPIKE tied the game after a RU attacking error, but the Eagles scored two straight points to close out the set and take a 1-0 match lead.  

Set 2: UPIKE 25, Reinhardt 22 

Reinhardt picked up where they left off and jumped out to an 8-1 run, and later lead 17-9. The Bears roared back, going on an 11-2 run to take the lead 20-19. UPIKE completed the comeback after kills from Lanie Hawley and Cassidy Rivas to tie the match at 1-1. 

Set 3: Reinhardt 25, UPIKE 14 

Just like they did in set two, the Eagles jumped out to a big lead early in set three. Reinhardt scored 15 of the first 18 points of the match. The Bears cut the lead to eight later, but the early deficit proved to be too much to overcome, and the Eagles took set three and took a 2-1 lead in the match.  

Set 4: Reinhardt 25, UPIKE 18 

UPIKE and Reinhardt split the first ten points of set four. Later, the Eagles held a 15-12 lead then pulled away after a 8-0 run. The Bears made it interesting with a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 24-18, but the Eagles ended it with a kill to take a 25-18 set win and a 3-1 match win.  

Tylie Barton surpassed 1,000 assists this season after adding 34 more today. Barton also led UPIKE with 13 digs and two serving aces. Olivia Chapman led the Bears offense with 11 kills. Theresa Romero had four blocks.  

Coach Mary Haynes' squad is 16-12 (11-9 AAC) following Saturday's loss to Reinhardt. UPIKE will be back in action Tuesday evening for a road match against the Bryan College Lions. Game time for UPIKE and Bryan is set for 6:30 p.m.
