Late run spoils season opener

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Lindsey Wilson College scored 15 of the final 17 points in the last five minutes of play to knock off the University of Pikeville 75-65 on Tuesday night in Biggers Sports Center.
 
Pikeville, 0-1, took a 63-60 lead with 5:23 left in the game when sophomore Rachel Bush nailed a three from the left wing.
 
Lindsey (3-0), however, pulled away, as five different players scored down the stretch with Amelia Hodges leading the way with eight points. The Bears, meanwhile, managed only an Allie Stone jumper down the stretch.
 
UPike jumped out to an early lead thanks to a pair of three-point buckets. Katie Collopy hit the first one and when junior India Blyth sank the second, the Bears led 6-2 with 6:55 left in the opening period.
 
Lindsey got back-to-back baskets from Claire Fleming and Jarie Thomas to tie the game at 6. It was tied again at 8 and 10.
 
The Blue Raiders then used a 10-3 run to take the lead. It took 2:07 for Lindsey to pull ahead, getting five points each from Amelia Hodges and Taylor Guess to take a 20-15 lead with 1:08 left. The lead was 22-17 at the end of the period.
 
Pikeville battled throughout the second quarter, but couldn't draw closer than three points. Back-to-back baskets by Saniyah Shelton and Natalie Gentry, the latter being a three, sent the Blue Raiders to the break on top 40-31.
 
The third quarter was kind to the Bears, who outscored Lindse 25-16 to send the game into the final 10 minutes tied at 56.
 
UPike hit 7-of-9 from the free throw line in the period, including a pair from Moore with 40 seconds left to pull within three, A three-point basket by Blyth with six seconds left knotted the score and set the stage for the final 10 minutes.
 
Bush scored a career-high 22 points to pace the Bears. She added nine rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals. Stone followed with 18.
 
Lindsey Wilson got 18 from Shelton, who also had seven rebounds and five assists. Thomas followed with 14 and a team-best eight rebounds, while Hodges and Guess scored 13 points each.
 
UPike will be back in action on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. when it travels to meet Oakland City (Ind.).
