PIKEVILLE, Ky. - University of Pikeville wrestling hosted a home tri-dual against Montreat College and Midway University Friday night at the UPIKE Gym.
Match 1: Montreat 36, UPIKE 22
UPIKE's first match of the evening pitted them against the Montreat Cavaliers. Brandon Didat opened the evening with a forfeit win in the 125 and Ethan Croom followed it up with a major decision win over Karter Watson in the 133. In the 141, Calvin Moon won via pin over Ayden Goodman.
Hayden Canady fell in the 149 to Makai Brinson. The Cavaliers won the 157 via forfeit then won the 165 after Dylan Hogan defeated Chase Price. Montreat took the 174, 184, and 197 via forfeit, leading up to the heavyweight bout.
In the 285 heavyweight class, ReGinald Whyte took on Grant Trotter. Whyte capped off the match with Montreat win a win by fall at 2:10.
Match 2: Midway 42, UPIKE 13
Brandon Didat grinded out a 12-10 victory over Kapela Joseph in the 125 class to open the match, then Ethan Croom won his match in the 133. Calvin Moon went 2-for-2 with a 9-0 major decision win over Alex Velazquez.
Hayden Canady was bested by MU's Chris Begley in the 149. The Eagles won the 157 via forfeit, then took the the 165 after Jabril Williams defeated Chase Price via fall.
The Eagles won the 174, 184, and 197 classes via forfeit, then won the heavyweight 285 after Aaron Garcia bested ReGinald Whyte.
"I feel like we are making progress. We are still a young team, but I like what we are going. We need to keep our foot on the gas and must keep it going throughout the match," said Head Coach Travis Mallo after tonight's matches.
The wrestling Bears will take to the mats again next Saturday in Gatlinburg, Tenn., for the Rocky Top Duals.
