BRISTOL, Tenn. - UPIKE men's tennis is off to a 1-0 start after a 4-3 win over King University Sunday.
Paulo Castillo and Mateo Vargas got the doubles matches started with a 6-0 win, then the Bears clinched the team point after Alfonso Robinson and Juan Diego Alzate won 7-5 over their KU counterparts.
In the singles matches, Juan Diego Alzate won 6-3, 6-2 over Rys Halcrow. Paulo Castillo defeated Audre Schiabel 6-3, 7-6 to put the Bears up 3-0 in the match. The Tornado charged back, however, winning the next two matches. KU's Alex Sodre won 6-0, 6-2 over Alfonso Robinson and Isaac Yans went 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 against UPIKE's Mateo Vargas. With the match at 3-2, Martin Lorenzo squared off with Matheus Vieira. Lorenzo won 6-3 and 6-0 to secure the match victory for the Bears.
Today's victory over the Tornado is the Bears' second consecutive win over KU. The Bears defeated the Tornado 6-1 on February 18th, 2023. Next up for the Bears is a road match against Huntington University on Friday.
