Baseball falls to Milligan in series finale

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. - UPIKE baseball was defeated 19-1 by Milligan in game three of an AAC series Saturday afternoon.

Just like game two, the Buffaloes got on the board in the bottom of the first. Milligan led off the first with a single and then followed it up with a two-run homer to left to go up 2-0. The Buffaloes added three more runs and led 5-0 after one. One inning later, the Buffaloes blew the game open with a two-out, solo shot to right. MU recorded three consecutive hits after the home run and scored three more runs. The score was 9-0 in favor of Milligan after two innings.

The Buffaloes added five more runs in the third, four in the fifth, and a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. The Bears struggled at the plate all day, and finally scored their first run in the top of the sixth. Noah Helton got the rally started with a two-out triple to right field. Helton then scored after a single to center field by Austin Gurey, his 33rd RBI of the season which is tied for second in the AAC. Gurney then advanced to second after a single by Tyler Maynard, giving the Bears two on with two out. Gurney and Maynard were left stranded after the next batter struck out swinging to end the inning.

Senior right-hander Cody Morton made his season debut on the mound. The Louisville, Ky., native hurled 48 pitches over 3.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits and one strikeout. Morton pitched MU in four groundouts and four flyouts as well.

Following the series loss to the Buffaloes, the Bears are 16-8 (9-5 AAC). The Bears will hit the field again Tuesday afternoon for a 3 p.m. matchup with Campbellsville University at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
