NAIA announces bowling honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - University of Pikeville men's and women's bowling combined for five All-Americans when NAIA officials announced their 2023-24 men's and women's bowling All-Americans. 19 members between the two teams were also honored for their hard work in the classroom when the 2023-24 Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes were announced. 

Kristina Catoe was named the NAIA Player of the Year while earning first-team All-American honors. The senior from Mooresville, N.C., competed in 12 tournaments this season. She was the winner of two of them, recorded five Top 5 finishes and was in the Top 10 in eight. She averaged 201.224 for the season and had a differential -- the difference between her average and that of the entire field in an event -- of 31.126.

Brianna Rogers, a sophomore from Florence, S.C., was named a second-team All-American. She averaged 199.333 in 10 tournaments with differential of 28.473.

Rounding out the All-American selections for the women's team are Kelsey Cummings and Vanessa Fuzie, who were both third-team selections. Cummings, a graduate student from Oxford, N.C., averaged 198.81 in 11 tournaments and was the winner of the NAIA Invitational held in Joliet, Ill., in November. Fuzie is a senior from Las Vegas who averaged 197.913 in 10 tournaments. She was the winner of the Orange & Black Classic, an event hosted by UPike in October.

Bryce Oliver was named a first team All-American on the men's side. He averaged 224.648 across 12 tournaments while compiling a differential of 38.722. He was the overall winner of three tournaments this season and had nine Top 5 finishes.

On top of these accolades, UPIKE women's bowling Head Coach Bobby Brown was named NAIA women's bowling Coach of the Year. The Bears led the NAIA in baker play scoring as well as spare percentage and single spare percentage. The Bears won seven events this season and finished in the Top 3 in every tournament it competed in this season.

Scholar-Athletes were also announced. To be nominated for this recognition, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale, must be on the eligibility certificate for their sport, and must have attended their institution for a full year. 

UPIKE women's bowling led the NAIA with 12 honorees. They are Anastasia Howell, Ava McLaughin, Brianna Rogers, Emily Lindsey, Erica Warne, Hana Hackworth, Kadie Dicken, Madison Stanton, Mikayla Blair, Rayce Yelton, Vanessa Fuzie, and Victoria Hines

The UPIKE men's bowling team had seven honorees, the third-most in the NAIA. Representing the men's team Josh Smith, Eli Mayberry, Wesley Yazell, Chris LeSueur, Bryce Oliver, Jeff Dovenbarger, and Dylan Mishak

The Bears are currently on the road for the NAIA National Championships in Sterling Heights, Mich.
