COLUMBIA, S.C. - UPIKE softball split a road doubleheader with Columbia International Thursday evening.
Game 1: UPIKE 1, CIU 4
The Rams tacked on a run in the bottom of the first after a two-out single. CIU went up 2-0 two innings later after a solo home run to left field. The Rams added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth and led 4-0 after six.
The Bears struggled in run support all game but finally broke through in the seventh. With one out in the top of the seventh, Jasmine Kaylor checked into the game as a pinch hitter and drew a walk. Kaylor then scored two batters later after Maddie Horn belted a double to the gap in left center. Horn led the Bears in hits, going 3-4 and batted in the Bears' only run of the game. CIU would go on to take game one by a final score of 4-1.
Game 2: UPIKE 4, CIU 3
CIU got off to another fast start in game two, this time taking advantage of an error and pushing two runs across in the bottom of the first. The Bears got one back in the top of the fifth, starting with a two-out walk by Lillie Kluesner. Kluesner scored one batter later after an RBI single by Alyssa Franklin. The Rams retook their two-run a half inning later and led 3-1 heading into the top of the sixth.
Jasmine Kaylor led off the sixth with a double to left, advanced to second after Sam Case drew a walk, then advanced to third after Kaden Dunlap flew out to right. With runners on the corners and one out, Sophie Kluesner cut CIU's lead in half after a single to left. One batter later, Addison Johnson recorded a productive out to advance Case and Kluesner into scoring position. Case and Kluesner would cross home plate after a triple by Maddie Horn to put the Bears ahead 4-3. UPIKE's defense held on and the Bears took game two.
Chloe Bryant got the start and the win in the circle for the Bears in game two. Bryant pitched a complete game, allowed three runs (one earned), struck out three, and stranded eleven CIU baserunners.
With today's split, UPIKE is now 6-5 (3-1 AAC). The Bears will hit the field again tomorrow afternoon for another road AAC doubleheader against Columbia College.
