Bears give Hewitt-Fisher first win

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – A goal in the middle of the second half was enough to give the University of Pikeville a 2-1 win over Midway University on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Amos Park.

The win was the first at UPike for Coach Oliver Hewitt-Fisher, who was hired in April as the new head coach of the men's soccer program. It comes in his first home game as Bears' coach.

Hewitt-Fisher's tenure at Pikeville began on Saturday with a game at IU-Columbus.

The game remained scoreless until the 64th minute when senior forward Anthony Aguilar found the net from 25 yards out. He scored off a pass from junior midfielder Fabian Carrasco.

In the 84th minute, Aguilar nailed a driving shot with an assist going to Jakob Rus.

It was the first goals of the season for last year's leading scorer for the Bears.

In the 87th minute, senior Anwar Perry scored an unassisted goal with a shot over the head of Pikeville goalkeeper Joao Do Couto.

Do Couto, a freshman, picked up the win in his first appearance in goal as a collegian. He recorded four saves in playing the entire game.

UPike had 11 shots, five of which were on goal. Junior Daron Baumann had the three unsuccessful shots on goal.

Midway's Ben Banton had two shots on goal in the loss. Senior Henry Alvor and sophomore Martin Escobar also had shots on goal.

The Bears will be back in action on Friday evening, playing host to Lawrence Tech (Mich.) at 7 p.m. at Bob Amos Park.
