Bears fall in final non-conference match

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - In their final non-conference match of the season, the University of Pikeville men's soccer team was defeated 8-0 by Carolina University Wednesday afternoon.  

Bears goalkeeper Adam Di Millo made a great save in the 11', then Olivier Wentink had the Bears' first shot of the game but it did not find the back of the net. Carolina struck first when Luigi Piccoli connected with Owen Vaughn in the 17', then Piccoli made it 2-0 one minute later. Jakub Rus had an excellent chance in the 27' off a great pass from Darron Baumann but CU's Joshua Wilson made the save. One minute after Rus's shot, the Bruins added another goal when Picolli connected with Karell Buitendijk in the 28'. Carolina took the 3-0 lead into halftime.  

The Bruins wasted no time in the second half getting on the scoreboard. Atikilt Tamiru scored a goal in the 51' off a feed from Jordan Julien. Darron Baumann had another shot on goal five minutes later but it was saved. UPIKE's best scoring chance of the match came by way of a penalty shot. Juan Farkas took the PK but his attempt went above the crossbar. Carolina added goals in the 63', 73', and 90' to take the match 8-0.  

UPIKE will hit the pitch again Saturday for a road match at Montreat. Kickoff between the Bears and Cavaliers is set for 5:30 p.m.
