COLUMBIA, S.C. - University of Pikeville men's soccer was defeated 3-1 by Columbia College Wednesday afternoon.
UPIKE had the first two shot attempts of the match. Finn Wijnen's attempt in the fourth minute went high and Juan Farkas's shot in the 8' was saved by Columbia goalkeeper Nathan Huff. The Koalas' first shot attempt of the match gave them the lead. Jakeem Amuda found Alex Koye in the 14' for the first goal of the match.
The Bears had two more shots in the first half. One came off the foot of Oliver Fausel in the 26' that was blocked and the second came from Paulo Castillo in the 42' that was saved by CC's Nathan Huff. Despite outshooting the Koalas 4-1, the Bears trailed 1-0 at halftime.
The Koalas came out of the halftime break and made the Bears pay for taking a yellow card inside the 18. Columbia would take a 2-0 lead after Theodosis Karouzou cashed in on the PK opportunity in the 48'. UPIKE and Columbia continued to battle until the Bears cut the Koalas' lead in half. Bruno Arenal fired a shot past Nathan Huff to get the Bears on the scoreboard in the 72'.
The Koalas' one-goal lead was short lived, however, as CC's Aedan Bowers helped Columbia reclaim their two-goal lead just 19 seconds after Arenal's goal. Oliver Fausel had the Bears' three shot attempts after Columbia took the 3-1 lead, but one hit the crossbar and the other two attempts were saved by Nathan Huff.
As a team, the Bears had ten shot attempts and six on net. Oliver Fausel led the Bears with four shot attempts, followed by Finn Wijnen with two, and Juan Farkas, Bruno Arenal, Rafael Chevarria, and Paulo Castillo had one each.
UPIKE men's soccer dips to 1-8 (0-4 AAC) following Wednesday's result. Coach Oliver Hewitt-Fisher's side will take to the pitch again Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. match against Bluefield University at Bob Amos Park.
