First half run the difference in UPike win over Brenau

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville had a 16-3 run in the first half and that was the difference in a 60-47 win over Brenau (Ga.) University on Saturday afternoon at the UPike Gym.

The win improved the Bears to 11-7 on the season, 10-4 in the AAC. The Golden Tigers fell to 4-13 overall, 3-9 in the conference.

Brenau led 14-10 after a three-point basket by junior Anna Gliatta with 3:58 left in the first period. It was then that the Bears began their run.

Junior Allie Stone got it started with a bucket before freshman Jaaliyah Warren tied it with a layup. Junior India Blyth nailed a three with 1:53 left in the period to send the Bears to the end of the period with a 17-14 lead.

They would never trail again.

Warren opened the second period with a three, which was matched by sophomore S.G. Bertolini. Stone followed with two free throws and a layup, and when sophomore Rachel Bush hit a short jumper with 7:40 left in the half, the lead was 26-17.

The 16-3 stretch lasted 5:56 of the first half. Brenau got within five points on three occasions as the second period concluded, but would get no closer the remainder of the day.

Stone led all scorers with 25 points. She was joined in double figures by Bush and Warren, who had 10 points apiece. Bush was solid overall, finishing with six rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block.

Junior Katie Collopy, who had four points, led the Bears with eight rebounds.

The Golden Tigers had one player in double digits, as Gliatta poured in 22 on 4 of 9 shooting from the arc. Senior Kayla Stafford, the league's leading rebounder, pulled down 22 in the loss.

UPike will enjoy a break before returning to action next Saturday, hosting Bryan (Tenn.) College. The game will begin at 2 p.m. at the UPike Gym.
