Men's soccer extends win streak with shutout win at Reinhardt

WALESKA, Ga. - University of Pikeville men's soccer extended their win streak to three after defeating the Reinhardt Eagles 1-0 Saturday night.

Jakub Rus had the first shot of the match in the 5th minute, but Reinhardt's Andree Meza was there for the save. The Bears turned up the heat on Reinhardt's defense between minutes 11 and 17, registering five shots (two on goal) and a corner kick. Despite the pressure, the Bears could not find the back of the net. UPike held an 11-5 advantage in shot attempts, but the score remained 0-0 through 45 minutes.

Nine minutes into the second half, the Bears offense turned up the heat on the Eagles. Bruno Arenal fired a shot on frame that was saved by Meza, then the Bears had a shot hit the crossbar. Right after hitting the crossbar, Samuel Cristancho fired a shot past Meza for the match's first goal to put the Bears up 1-0.

Reinhardt had a great chance on net in the 69th minute. RU's Evan De You fired a shot on frame but the Eagles were kept off the scoresheet because Yali Cohen made a defensive save. Six minutes later, Alejandro Iglesias turned away Reinhardt's Sebastian Rendon, their final shot on goal of the match.

UPike's defense held strong over the final 15 minutes for a 1-0 victory. Iglesias finished the match with four saves and now has six shutouts this season. Shots on goal for the match were 20-8 in favor of the Bears.

Coach Oliver Hewitt-Fisher's team is now 8-5-2 (6-2-2) following Saturday night's victory over Reinhardt. UPike is now fourth in the AAC with two games left in the season. Next up for the Bears is a 5:30 p.m. home match against the Montreat Cavaliers on Wednesday at Bob Amos Park.
