WALESKA, Ga. – Two University of Pikeville football players have been named players of the week by the AAC.
Â
Jeff Flowers was named defensive player of the week while
Maurice Davis has been honored as special teams player of the week. Both received the honor for the first time.
Â
Flowers, a 6-2, 230-pound grad student and defensive end from Montgomery, Ala., earned the honor thanks to having four tackles for loss, three of which were sacks, and one forced fumble in Saturday's win over Point (Ga.) University.
Â
Flowers also had seven tackles, six of which were solos.
Â
Only two players in school history have had more than three sacks in a single game, none in the last 22 seasons. It has been seven seasons since a Bear had three in a game.
Â
His sacks cost the Skyhawks 17 yards, while his other tackle for loss accounted for five more yards.
Â
For the season, Flowers has amassed 13 tackles, 10 of them solos, and five tackles for loss. He also has a quarterback hurry and has broken up a pass.
Â
Davis is a 5-9, 163-pound freshman from Chicago who took the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. The score set the tone for what would prove to be a 62-10 win on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Only one return has ever gone for more yards, a 100-yard return by Hall of Famer Antwan Marsh at Bethel on Sept. 11, 2004.
Â
A wide receiver by trade, Davis has returned five kickoffs and is averaging 33.2 yards per return on the season, which leads the Bears.
Â
UPike is now 2-4 on the season but most importantly, 2-0 in the AAC. The Bears are one of two teams without a loss in league play this season.
Â
They'll return to action on Saturday evening when they travel to Bluefield, Va., to play the Rams. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
