Eight straight: Volleyball wins on Senior Night

The University of Pikeville kept its amazing streak intact on Friday night in a 3-0 Senior Night win over Tennessee Wesleyan University to complete the season sweep of the Bulldogs.
 
The win was the eighth straight for the Bears, all in AAC play. They now stand 16-11 on the season, but more importantly, 13-3 in the conference.
 
The Bulldogs fell to 18-11 overall, 10-7 in the league.
 
Senior Alondra Ayende led the Bears with nine kills, while senior Gracey Lovgren and junior Lanie Hawley added seven. UPike had nine service aces, with Ayende and junior Chloie Brinton having three of them each.
 
Brinton returned to the lineup and had 24 assists in addition to the service aces. She and Hawley had eight digs each to lead the club on defense.
 
Hawley and sophomore Olivia Chapman had six block assists to pace the team, while Ayende had five and senior Alex Van Dyke four. Lovegren had three block assists and the only solo block of the evening.
 
UPike will wrap up the home portion of its schedule on Saturday morning, hosting Bryan College at 11 a.m. at the UPike Gym.
 
Bears 25, Bulldogs 15: UPike opened the match with a 7-1 run to take control early. The Bears scored three points in the run on blocks by senior Gracey Lovgren and junior Lanie Hawley. The Bulldogs got within four at 12-8 before the Bears scored five straight to start an 11-3 run. Hawley and Ayende had two kills each, while Lovegren and senior Alex Van Dyke had one apiece. Brinton added a pair of service aces in the win.
 
Bears 25, Bulldogs 23: The second set was tight from start to finish. UPike finally took a three-point lead at 14-11 on consecutive kills by Ayende, but TWU immediately scored three straight to tie it again. A 6-1 stretch for the Bears pushed the lead to 20-15, thanks to two kills by Brinton and one by Lovgren. The Bulldogs then scored four straight as part of a 6-1 run of their own to tie the score once more at 21. Tied at 23, the Bears got a kill by Hawley to regain serve, and then she finished it with a service ace.
 
Bears 25, Bulldogs 14: Tied at two early, UPike scored three straight points on a kill and service ace by Lovgren and a block by Hawley and Van Dyke. The Bears scored four straight to run the lead to 9-3. A kill by Ayende ended another four-point run and made the lead 13-5. The Bulldogs scored four straight to cut the lead to 13-9 before UPike had a 6-1 run that included an Ayende service ace to make the lead 19-10.
