Bears advance in AAC tourney with win over TWU

The University of Pikeville picked up the first postseason win since entering the AAC with a 3-2 win over Tennessee Wesleyan University on Friday afternoon at Bob Amos Park.

With the win, the fourth-seeded Bears (10-5-3) will advance to play in the conference semifinals, where they will play the winner of today's game between top-seeded Union Commonwealth University and No. 8 Spartanburg Methodist College.

That game will be played on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at the site of the highest seeded team involved in the contest.

Friday's win was the first in a postseason game since Nov. 5, 2019, when they beat Thomas More University 3-1 in the opening round of the Mid-South Conference tournament.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first, coming in the 27th minute. Senior Charlie Wood found the back of the net for the first time this season off a pass from junior David Tayau to give TWU a 1-0 lead. It was Tayau's fourth assist.

Before the half, however, the Bears had taken the lead.

It started in the 37th minute on a header from Jakub Rus thanks to a pass from sophomore Oliver Fausel to even the count. For Rus, it was his seventh goal on the season, which is second on the team. Fausel recorded his third assist.

In the final minute of the first half, UPike gained the lead. Sophomore Bruno Arenal scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season, going behind his body for the goal. Senior Samuel Christancho had his second assist of the campaign.

Arenal's goal made him one of only three players in the conference with double figure goals.

The Bears scored an insurance goal, coming on the first collegiate goal for freshman Sam Allison in the 77th minute. Arenal had the assist.

It proved valuable in the 83rd minute when senior Nicko Bellot scored on a penalty kick.

The Bulldogs, however, had only one more shot and it was high.

UPike had 13 shots in the win, seven of them on goal. TWU had nine shots, five on goal.

Freshman Alejandro Iglesias picked up the win, turning away three shots.
