Men's Soccer falls in AAC Tournament to Bulldogs

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - University of Pikeville men's soccer's 2025 season came to an end Tuesday after a 2-0 loss to No. 1 Union Commonwealth in round two of the 2025 AAC Men's Soccer Tournament Tuesday.

Five minutes into the match, Union Commonwealth had the first scoring chance but Bears goalkeeper Alejandro Iglesias was there for the save. UPike's first scoring chance was a shot by Bruno Arenal that hit off the crossbar.

The Bulldogs would cash in on their next scoring chance in the 17th minute. UCU's Zak Hardman connected with Ethan Kemp who fired a shot past Iglesias to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. Kemp's goal was the only goal of the first 45 minutes.

The Bears' lone shot on goal in the first half came via a header from Jakob Rus. Rus's header came seconds after Kemp's goal and was turned away by UCU goalkeeper Gabriel Mendoza. UCU held a 6-4 advantage in shot attempts, including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal in the first half.

UPike had an excellent scoring chance early in the second half. The Bears drove deep into Bulldog territory and drew a corner kick. Bruno Arenal found Finn Wijnen, who had a great header shot but Mendoza made the save to keep the score at 1-0. The Bears' next great scoring chance came seven minutes later when Mahmoud Shech-Ichya fired a shot that rang off the crossbar.

The Bulldogs put some pressure on the Bears later in the half and finally broke through. UCU's Ron-Jay Watson crossed the ball inside the box and found Eduardo Ribeiro to put the Bulldogs up 2-0 in the 79th minute. Ribeiro's goal would prove to be the final goal of the match and the Bulldogs won 2-0.

Oliver Hewitt-Fisher's team finishes the season with a record of 11-6-3 and finished 7-2-3 in conference play. The Bears' 11 overall wins and seven conference wins are both program records.
