MILLIGAN, Tenn. - University of Pikeville volleyball was defeated 3-1 by the Milligan Buffaloes Tuesday night on the road.
Milligan jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first and led by as many as nine midway through the set. The Bears clawed their way back, going on a 16-7 run to tie the score late. Despite the comeback, the Buffaloes would take the first set 27-25.
UPike bounced back in set two, scoring seven of the first eight points. Milligan made a late push, but the Bears used their early lead to coast to a 25-18 win in set two to tie the match at 1-1.
Milligan held a slim, 14-13 lead midway through the third set before going on a 6-0 run. The Buffaloes went on to take set three with the same score the Bears took set two with, 25-18.
With a 2-1 match lead, Milligan picked up where they left off in set four, scoring ten of the first 15 points, and led by as much as 15-7. Later, with Milligan leading 22-15, UPike went to an 6-1 run to cut the Buffaloes lead to 23-21. The Bears' comeback fell short, however, as Milligan took the next two points and took the match 3-1.
Alondra Ayende led UPike with 14 kills, followed by Gracey Lovgren with 12. Lovgren was also second in blocks with 3.0. Lanie Hawley led the Bears front line with six blocks. Chloie Brinton had 49 assists on the night and now has 651 on the season.
UPike is now 8-10 (5-2 AAC) following Tuesday's loss to Milligan. Coach Mary Haynes' team will stay on the road Friday for a 6:30 p.m. road match against the Reinhardt Eagles.
