Third quarter turnaround lifts Bears past Bulldogs

The University of Pikeville outscored Union Commonwealth University 30-10 in the third quarter en route to a 88-68 win Wednesday night to remain unbeaten in AAC play.

UPike is now 5-1 on the season, 5-0 in the conference.

UPike's big third quarter was spurred on by an incredible 21-3 advantage on the glass, pulling down nine offensive rebounds to only one for the Bulldogs.

Junior Bush had eight of her team-high 18 points in the third quarter.

The Bears got the win without the use of AAC Player of the Year Allie Stone, who sat out the game with an injury.

A 6-0 run early gave the Bears an 11-7 lead. A jumper by Bush was followed by layups by Jaidy Mejia-Andrade and Ankia Stehbens had the Bears up four with 4:23 left in the opening period.

But UPike missed its next five shots and the Bulldogs ran off nine unanswered points, the last five of which came from freshman Aymanni Wynn to go up 16-11. The lead was 23-15 after a period.

Union led 28-16 after junior Rachel Smith nailed a three with 7:46 left in the half. But UPike scored 12 of the next 14 points to pull within two. Freshman Sophie Adkins had five during the run, while freshman Savannah Jarvis scored four as the Bears cut the lead to 30-28 with 4:43 remaining.

A layup by Bush with five seconds left sent the teams to the break with Union holding a 39-36 lead.

Union led 42-36 before a 10-0 run put UPike back on top. Bush had six in the stretch and two Stehbens free throws with 6:04 remaining had the Bears in front 46-39.

The run began what would prove to be a 23-5 extended run that lasted 7:22. Five Bears scored in the stretch, with Bush and Stehbens accounting for eight each.

By the end of the period, what was a five-point deficit early in the frame was a 66-49 lead with 10 minutes to play.

Bush led six players in double figures in the win. She was joined by Stehbens and Jaahiyah Warren with 13 each.

Freshman Halle Collins continued her hot start to the season with 12 points and 17 rebounds, eight of which were off the offensive glass. Her efforts, and the third period domination, led to a 49-32 advantage on the glass.

Mejia-Andrade and Adkins had 10 markers each.

UCU (1-6, 0-3) was led by freshman Kylie Noe with 18 points. They got 13 from Wynn. Sophomore guard Sarah Smith had eight points and eight rebounds.

UPike will travel to Campbellsville for the weekend, playing Lindsey Wilson on Friday night and Campbellsville on Saturday afternoon.
