PIKEVILLE, Ky. - University of Pikeville men's and women's swimming took on Shawnee State in a battle of the Bears Monday evening.
On the men's side, Benjamin McLaughlan, Jacob Rubado, Bryce Barton, and RJ Goins edged out a first-place finish in the 200-medley relay, scoring 11 team points. That same group secured four more team points after taking second place in the 200-freestyle relay.
Rubado won the 100-breaststroke and 50-breastroke events. McLaughlan scored 13 team points after winning the 100-backstroke and a second-place finish in the 50-backstroke. Barton swam in the 100-butterfly and 50-butterfly and finished second and fourth, respectively.
Goins wrapped up the men's results with times of 52.53 in the 100-freestyle and 1:03.90 in the 100-individual medley, finishing second in both events.
The men's team were defeated by SSU's men's team 108-58.
On the women's side, the team of Daylin Patrick, Madelyn Smith, Kaylin Hatfield, and Bailey Walker captured 11 team points after winning the 200-medley relay. The same four Bears also took first in the 200-freestyle relay.
Patrick took first in the 100-backstroke and the 50-backstroke. Smith swam a 34.66 in the 50-breaststroke and a 1:20.78 in the 100-breaststroke and took first place in both events.
Hatfield and Walker had a pair of second-place finishes. Hatfield took second in the 200-freestyle and 100-individual medley. Walker took second in the 100-freestyle and 50-freestyle.
The UPike women's team would go on to win 74-36 over SSU.
Shawnee State would go on to win the meet by a combined final score of 144-132.
Coach Bernie Haney's swim Bears will be back in the pool on January 15th when they travel to Beckley, W.Va., to take on the WVU-Tech Golden Bears.
