No. 6 Freed-Hardeman knocks off UPike

 
 
UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – Sixth-ranked Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University picked up an 80-57 over the University of Pikeville on Monday afternoon in the GSU Winter Classic.
 
The two-day event is hosted by Governors State University.
 
UPike (7-7) struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-5 after one period and 36-18 at the half.
 
The Bears, with only seven players available for the game, battled to pull within 13 (65-52) on pair of free throws by sophomore Jaaliyah Warren with 5:57 left in the game, but could get no closer.
 
Warren finished with 14 points, hitting 5 for 6 from the free throw line.
 
The Bears were led by freshman guard Anika Stehbens, who hit for 21 points in the game.
 
UPike struggled shooting the ball, hitting only 20 of 60 (33.3 percent) overall while going 4 for 20 (20 percent) from the arc.
 
Senior forward Jaidy Mejia-Andrade gave the Bears a solid presence on the inside, finishing with 13 rebounds and four blocked shots.
 
Freed-Hardeman, which remained perfect at 13-0, put three players in double figures on Monday. The Lions were led by sophomore Lily Kee with 29 points. She got there shooting an efficient 11 for 14 from the field and 7 of 9 from the line. She also had 11 rebounds.
 
Freshman Ally Weathers joined her in double digits with 17 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Jenna Satterly finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.
 
UPike will wrap up play in the Winter Classic on Tuesday when it plays Midway (Ky.) University. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
