UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – The University of Pikeville women's basketball team wrapped up play in the Winter Classic on Tuesday with an 81-72 loss to Midway (Ky.) College.

The Bears led 22-19 after one period of play, but saw the Eagles enjoy a 23-15 scoring advantage in the second quarter to lead 42-37 at the half.

The second quarter proved to be the difference in the game.

UPike opened the final period with the final seven points of a 10-0 run, and when sophomore guard
Hazley Matthews hit a jumper with 5:58 left in the game, the Bears led 61-59.

But Midway answered with the next five points to regain the lead, and never trailed again. While they were only 7 of 16 from the field in the final period, the Eagles hit 7 of 9 from the line to pull out the win.

Freshman forward
Sophie Adkins scored a career-high 20 points on the day, finishing very close to a triple-double. She ended the game with nine rebounds and eight assists.

Her rebounds, combined with 14 by senior
Jaidy Mejia-Andrade, led the Bears to a 50-42 advantage on the glass.

Adkins was joined in double figures by freshman
Anika Stehbens with 19, while sophomore
Jaaliyah Warren tossed in 14. Stehbens added seven rebounds and five assists, while Warren sank four three-pointers.

UPike had 21 assists on its 28 made field goals.

Midway was paced by freshman guard Alexys Moore, who had a career-high 30 points for the Eagles. She was four for five from the arc and sank all six free throw attempts while pulling down five rebounds and dishing out four assists.

Sophomore A'Lyrica Hughes had 13 points and four assists for the Eagles.

UPike will remain away from home on Saturday when it returns to AAC play, visiting Truett McConnell (Ga.) University. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
