COLUMBIA, S.C. - Bears baseball opened up AAC play with a 14-7 road victory over Columbia International Thursday night.
The Bears' first baserunner came in the top of the second when Noah Brooks drew a one-out walk. Joe Gagnon doubled one at-bat later to advance Brooks to third. Brooks then scored the game's first run after a CIU fielding error.
UPIKE doubled their lead in the top of the third, starting with a one-out walk by Cam Revolt. After Tanner Gerosa flew out to left, Garren Gledhill drew a two-out walk and then both Gledhill and Revolt advanced after a wild pitch. Austin Gurney drew a walk to load the bases, and then the Bears took a 2-0 lead after Brooks was hit by a pitch.
The Bears blew the game open in the fourth. Cole Fowler reached base after a throwing error, then advanced to second after a single by Francis Subero. Revolt was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Fowler scored after a sacrifice fly by Gerosa. After Fowler scored, Gledhill drew a walk to load the bases again. With two outs and the bases loaded, Austin Gurney made it 7-0 with a single to center.
William Kelley lead off the fifth with a solo home run to put UPIKE up 8-0. After Kelley's homer, Fowler was hit by a pitch and then advanced to third after Francis Subero reached base on a fielding error. Two at-bats later, Fowler scored on a will pitch to make it 9-0.
The Rams would no go away quietly, however, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth. UPIKE countered with three runs in the sixth. Austin Gurney led it off with a walk, Brooks struck out, then Marques Richards and Kelley were hit by a pitch on back-to-back at-bats. Gurney scored after a ground out by Fowler, and then Kelley and Richards scored after a single by Subero.
CIU cut the lead to 12-6 in the bottom of the eighth and the Bears responded with a pair of runs one frame later. Gerosa lead off the ninth with a walk and then Gledhill sent a fastball over the fence in right field. The Rams scored one in the bottom of the ninth but the Bears were able to close it out and secure the victory in game one.
Riley Paulino was credited with the win after hurling 113 pitches over 5.0 innings of work. Paulino allowed five runs on seven hits and nine strikeouts.
With Thursday's win, the Bears have now won six in a row. UPIKE and CIU will wrap up the series with a doubleheader starting tomorrow at noon.
