COLUMBIA, S.C. - Bears baseball won their first AAC series of the season after splitting a doubleheader with Columbia International Friday.
Game 1: UPIKE 6, CIU 2
UPIKE drew first blood in game one, starting with a lead off walk by catcher Hunter Ferguson. Connor Moody checked into the game as a courtesy runner for Ferguson and quickly advanced to second after a single by Francis Subero. Moody tapped the dish one at-bat later after Cam Revolt doubled down the left field line.
Two innings later, Gavin Fraser led off and reached base after a fielding error then got into scoring position after Subero grounded out. Fraser would put the Bears up 2-0 after Revolt singled to center. Revolt would score shortly after via a single by Riley Paulino. UPIKE held a 3-0 lead after five innings.
The Bears put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth. Noah Brooks got the rally started with a single to left, then got into scoring position after a wild pitch. Two batters later, Brooks reached third after Ferguson reached via error.
Moody once again checked in for Ferguson and quickly stole second. After a strikeout by Fraser, Subero walked to load the bases. With the bases loaded and two outs, Revolt singled to center to put the Bears up 5-0, then Paulino double to right to make it 6-0.
The Rams got a pair back in the bottom of the seventh but the Bears closed out the game 6-2. In winning game two, the Bears also have a series victory over CIU.
Kameron Brodeur improved to 3-0 on the mound for the Bears. Brodeur threw 101 pitches over 6.1 innings of work, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out two. Caleb Morrison finished off the Rams with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief and four strikeouts.
Game 2: CIU 4, UPIKE 1
CIU scored first in game two after a single to right by Tre Williams. The Rams added three more runs in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a UPIKE error. After two, CIU lead 4-0.
Garren Gledhill recorded the Bears' first hit of the game. Gledhill singled to center field but was left stranded. The Bears' next hit came off the bat of Revolt in the top of the sixth.
Revolt reached on an infield hit and then got into scoring position after a passed ball. Paulino drew a walk and UPIKE had two on with no outs. Revolt advanced to third in the next at-bat and then scored after a sacrifice fly by Austin Gurney
In the top of the seventh, Ian Setzer checked into the game to pinch hit and drew a one-out walk. Moody entered the game as a pinch-runner and advanced to second after a wild pitch. Moody would not advance any further and CIU took game two.
UPIKE is 7-3 (2-1 AAC) following their first conference series of the season. Coach Cody Andreychuk's team will be back in action Wednesday in Pippa Passes, Ky., for a 3:00 p.m. game against the Alice Lloyd Eagles.
