Six-run fifth too much for Bears

DAYTON, Tenn. – Bryan College rallied and posted six runs in the fifth inning en route to a 10-4 win over the University of Pikeville on Friday in the first game of a weekend AAC series.

The Bears had taken a two-run lead in the top of the fifth before the Lions exploded in the bottom of the inning.

Bryan (6-6, 3-1 in the AAC) scored in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. Caleb Ramsey doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly. The Bears answered in the third when Mason Melton led off with a single and came around to score when Austin Gurney reached on an error.

UPike took the lead in the top of the fifth when left fielder Noah Brooks blasted a two-run home run to center to score Garren Gledhill, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning.

But then came the big rally by the Lions, who sent 10 batters to the plate and saw six of them score to take a 6-3 lead.

The Lions added two in the sixth on a two-run double by Logan Stradley to make it 9-3.

Each team added a run in the eighth. UPike scored when Hunter Ferguson singled in Francis Subero, who opened the frame with a double, but Stradley answered with a leadoff home run in the bottom half.

UPike (7-4, 2-2) got nine hits on the day. Brooks and starting catcher Tanner Gerosa had two each. Ferguson, Subero, Mason, Cam Revolt and William Kelly added hits.

Riley Paulino squared his record at 2-2, throwing the first 4-2/3 innings. Brody Mangold pitched the final 3-1/3.

The teams are slated to return to the field on Saturday at noon to finish the series with a doubleheader.
