SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UPIKE softball opened its 2025 season with two losses at Spartanburg Methodist Friday.
Game 1: Spartanburg Methodist 8, UPIKE 2
The first runs of the UPIKE's 2025 season came off the bat of Chloe Bryant in the top of the second. Kaden Dunlap got on base with a lead off walk and then scored after Bryant sent one over the fence in left field.Â
The Bears' lead was quickly cut in half in the bottom half of the second after SMC's McKensleigh Parnell signed to center.Â
The Pioneers tied the game two innings later, then blew the game wide open in the fifth. SMC scored five runs on six hits and led 7-2 after five.Â
SMC added another run in the sixth and took game one by a final count of 8-2. UPIKE finished the game with five hits, two of which came off the bat of Chloe Bryant.Â
Game 2: Spartanburg Methodist 6, UPIKE 4
Game two started with back-to-back singles by Dani Crum and Maddie Horn, respectively. Crum scored two at-bats later after Bryant reached on an error.Â
The Pioneers answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. SMC's Adriana Stump tied the game with a triple and scored two batters later after a single by teammate Alex Stuckey.Â
UPIKE countered by scoring three runs with two outs in the top of the second. With two on and two out, Horn singled to right to give the Bears a 3-2 lead and then scored one at-bat later after a single by Mullins.Â
Just like they did in the first, SMC scored a pair of runs to tie the game. A sacrifice groundout by Emily Kelly and a single by Gracie Starnes tied the game at 4-4.Â
SMC took the lead in the bottom of the third after an RBI single by Parnell to go up 5-4. The Pioneers added an insurance run in the sixth and went on to win game two 6-4.Â
UPIKE finished the game with nine hits. Crum and Horn led the Bears with three hits each.Â
The Bears are 0-2 following Friday's games. UPIKE will come back home for their 2025 home opener next Saturday against Alice Lloyd and Siena Heights. Game one against ALC will start at noon and game two against SHU will start at 4:00 p.m. at Paul Butcher Field.
