Stone's career high 33 lifts Bears past Brenau

GAINESVILLE, Ga. – The University of Pikeville closed out the third period with 13 unanswered points to pull away from Brenau University and post a 55-47 win on Saturday afternoon.

The win was the seventh in a row for the Bears, all against AAC competition, and gave them a sweep of the regular-season series with the Golden Tigers.

Leading 31-28 after a pair of Anna Giatta free throws with 2:49 left in the third, UPike put it together quickly. Junior guard Allie Stone and India Blyth did all the scoring. Stone had the first four before Blyth nailed a three-point shot.

Stone then sank five straight free throws, including three after being fouled on a three-point shot with no time remaining in the quarter, as the Bears outscored the Tigers 23-8 in the frame.

The Olive Hill product led all scorers with a career-high 33 points on a day she passed Bear Hall of Famers Karissa Porter and Melody Sturgill to enter the Top 10 on the school's all-time scoring list.

She now has 1,559 points in her career at UPike.

Stone also set personal career records by going 13 for 13 from the free throw line in the win.

Sophomore wing Rachel Bush helped the short-handed Bears with a double-double, scoring 12 while grabbing 11 rebounds. UPike played only seven players in the contest.

Junior Jaidy Mejia-Andrade had 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots to go with four points.

Gliatta led the Golden Tigers with 21 points, hitting five three-point shots. Kristina Peach followed with 12.

Each team had only five players score in the game.

Kayla Stafford, who had six points, pulled down 26 rebounds for Brenau.

UPike, 16-7 overall and 15-4 in the league, will remain on the road, playing Monday night at Truett McConnell (Ga.) University. The game is a makeup from a game that was snowed out.

Brenau is now 7-17, 6-13 on the season.
