Baseball splits doubleheader at Bryan

DAYTON, Tenn. - UPIKE baseball split Saturday's doubleheader at Bryan College.

Game 1: UPIKE 15, Bryan 14

After falling behind 4-0, it took all of two swings of the bat in the top of the fourth to put the Bears ahead. With two on and two out, Hunter Ferguson cut the lead to 4-3 with his first home run of the season. Two batters later, Riley Paulino put UPIKE up 6-4 with a three-run blast to center field.

After the Lions scored four in the bottom of the fourth, UPIKE responded with five runs in the top of the fifth. After a Noah Brooks walk and a double by Austin Gurney, walks by William Kelley and Hunter Ferguson got one run back for the Bears. With the bases loaded and one out, Francis Subero put the Bears back in front with a grand slam over the center field wall.

UPIKE went up 12-8 in the sixth after Noah Brooks scored on a wild pitch. Two innings later, the bears added three insurance runs, with the RBIs coming off the bats of Austin Gurney, Hunter Ferguson, and Francis Subero.

The Bears had a seven-run lead heading into the ninth inning, but the Lions would not go away quietly. Bryan took advantage of two passed balls and a UPIKE error en route to a six-run bottom of the ninth. Despite the Lions roaring back, Maquire Wakelyn came in with runners of the corners and two outs. Wakelyn recorded the final out of the game and was credited with his third save of the season.

Riley Paulino led UPIKE with three hits. Francis Subero and Hunter Ferguson had five RBIs each, both career highs. On the mound, Richtter Castillo was credited with the win after 5.2 innings of work.

Game 2: Bryan 6, UPIKE 4

Bryan got on the board early in game two with a two-run double in the bottom of the first and then went up 3-0 in the third after a wild pitch. In the fourth, Noah Brooks and Austin Gurney hit back-to-back homers and then Garren Gledhill tied the game with a solo shot two batters later.

The Lions took the lead back a half inning later after a two-run home run to center field. Back-to-back doubles by Noah Brooks and Austin Gurney cut the Lions' lead to 5-4 in the top of the sixth. Bryan regained their two-run lead in the sixth after a solo home run. The Bears went down in order in the seventh and Bryan won 6-4.

Noah Brooks and Austin Gurney had two hits each, both for extra bases. Shaye McTavish started on the mound, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and five strikeouts. McTavish was credited with the loss in game two.

Bryan took the series after winning game two. After this weekend, the Bears are 8-5 (3-3 AAC). UPIKE will hit the field Tuesday afternoon at Midway.
