TWU's incredible second half too much for the Bears

ATHENS, Tenn. – The University of Pikeville allowed 61 second-half points as Tennessee Wesleyan University rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to an 88-82 win on Saturday.

The loss ended a five-game winning streak for the Bears, who slipped to 20-5 on the season, 13-4 in the AAC.

UPike shot 53.1 percent in the first half and got 13 points from graduate student Cade Looney en route to a 42-27 lead at the half. It also had a 16-9 advantage on the glass at the midpoint of the game.

But the second half was a different story, as the Bulldogs blistered the nets. They made 21 of 28 shots after recess, good for 75 percent. They also hit 4 of 6 from outside and, after shooting only two free throws in the first half, went 15 of 18 in the final 20 minutes.

The Bears didn't shoot horribly, hitting 49.3 percent of their shots in the game. They made only 6 of 24 (25 percent) of their three-point shots.

All five starters were in double figures, led by junior Bradley Bunch with 24 while pulling down 11 rebounds. He scored 20 of his team's 40 points in the second half.

Looney finished with 15, while junior Keynan Cutlip added 12 to go with five rebounds and five assists. Junior guards LA Walker and Keian Worrix had 10 points each. Worrix added four assists.

Ty Hurst led the Bulldogs with 21 points while grabbing six rebounds. Charles Neverdon came off the bench for 20 points, nailing four three-point shots.

Amauri Young finished with 12, while Armando Cuardado had 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Bears will return home on Wednesday night, entertaining Union Commonwealth University. The former Union College will come to town for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
