Softball sweeps doubleheader against Milligan

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - University of Pikeville softball extended their win streak to five after sweeping a doubleheader against Milligan University Saturday at Paul Butcher Field. The Bears are 10-7 (4-2 AAC) and will hit the road Tuesday for a doubleheader against Union Commonwealth University.

Game 1: UPIKE 7, Milligan 5

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth with a runner on second and one out, Kaden Dunlap tied the game with a double to right. Dunlap scored right after to put the Bears ahead for good. Later in the inning, Sam Case added two more runs with a single to left to score Addison Johnson and Dani Crum.

Maddie Horn led off the fifth with a triple to right and Maria McClellan reached on an infield single. Both Horn and McClellan scored two at-bats later when Dunlap doubled to center field. UPIKE led 7-2 after five.

The Buffaloes score two in the sixth and then made things interesting in the seventh. After Brianna Johnsen struck out the leadoff hitter, MU's Alana Parsons homered to cut the lead to 7-5 and then the next batter tripled to right.

With the tying run at third, Sara Bays checked into the game to close out the game. The next batter walked, but Bays slammed the door on Milligan's comeback bid after retiring the next two batters to close out game one.

Game 2: UPIKE 5, Milligan 4

Just like game one, the Bears used a big inning to go ahead and stay ahead. Trailing 2-0 in the fifth, Crum knotted the score at 2-2 with a two-out single to center. Crum, along with Addison Johnson, would score two at-bats later after Case singled to left. Harlee Quick capped off a five-run fifth with an RBI single to left.

The Buffaloes would not go away quietly. Just like game one, Milligan made a push in the top of the seventh. With two outs and the bases empty, Milligan's Alexis Brown doubled to left and scored one at-bat later after a UPIKE fielding error.

The Buffaloes cut the lead to 5-4 in the next at-bat when Morgan Lawson tripled down the right field line. Rylee Carter put an end to the Buffaloes' comeback after the next batter popped out to second.
