Montreat (N.C.) College picked up a sweep of Friday afternoon's doubleheader over the University of Pikeville, taking the first one 4-3 and winning the nightcap 4-0.
Â
UPike (10-13, 4-8 in the AAC) will be back in action on Thursday, visiting Pippa Passes to play Alice Lloyd College in a doubleheader.
Â
Montreat improved to 17-11 on the season, 5-5 in the league.
Â
Cavs 4, Bears 3: Both teams plated two in the first.
Â
Maggie Knight got the Cavs on the scoreboard with a two-run homer to right field. UPike answered with a sacrifice fly by
Harlee Quick and an infield single by
Maddie Horn to even the score.
Â
It stayed that way until the fifth when Montreat took the lead with a pair of runs. Again, Knight was in the middle of it, delivering the go-ahead run with a double and then scoring on a squeeze play to make it 4-2.
Â
UPike pulled within a run in the sixth when Quick had another sacrifice fly, and centerfielder
Addison Johnson scored for the second time in the game.
Â
The Bears threatened in the seventh when pinch hitter
Emma Muncy singled and was sacrificed into scoring position by
Clara Blair. But with two outs,
Dani Crum lined out to the shortstop to end the game.
Â
Johnson and Horn had two hits apiece for the Bears. Crum, Muncy and
Kaden Dunlap all singled.
Â
Brianna Johnson pitched a complete game but fell to 4-5 on the season. Montreat starter Rebecca Carson pitched the first four for the win.
Â
Cavs 4, Bears 0: The Bears pounded out 10 hits but couldn't get the one they needed in a shutout in the second game. UPike left 11 runners stranded, with the 10 hits and a walk.
Â
Meanwhile, Montreat posted four in the top of the first and made them stand up.
Â
Dunlap had three hits including a double for the Bears. Crum, Johnson and first baseman
Claudia Maness had two hits apiece, while designated player
Harlee Quick also had a hit.
Â
Freshman
Rylee Carter (4-7) pitched the first six innings for the Bears, recording four strikeouts. Three of the first-inning runs were earned.
