Bears earn DH split at ALC

PIPPA PASSES, Ky. – The University of Pikeville earned a split on Thursday afternoon at Alice Lloyd, falling in the opener 7-3 but rallying for the 1-0 win in the closer.
UPike is now 11-14 on the season and will resume AAC play on Saturday when it visits Johnson (Tenn.) University. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
Alice Lloyd is now 16-11.
Eagles 7, Bears 3: Trailing 3-2 after an inning, UPike plated one in the top of the second to even the score. But in the bottom of the second, Alice Lloyd scored three more times to take control.
Catcher Dani Crum tripled, singled and scored, while Maddie Horn doubled and singled. Centerfielder Addison Johnson singled and drove in two, while left fielder Maria McClellan singled and scored.
Designated hitter Harlee Quick had a sacrifice fly RBI.
Starting pitcher Chloe Calton (0-1) went the distance for the Bears and struck out eight.
Bears 1, Eagles 0: A single tally in the top of the sixth was all UPike would need to gain the split.
It came on one swing of the bat when Crum tripled with two outs and came around to score on the throw. The freshman had two of the three hits for the Bears in the win.
The other was a single by Horn.
That was all Sara Bays would need, as she scattered five hits, all singles, and pitched all seven innings. She improved to 3-1 on the season.
