Bears split Saturday DH with Rams

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville and Bluefield (Va.) University split a doubleheader on Saturday, with the Bears taking the opener 7-3 while the Rams picked up the nightcap 3-2.

The split gave Bluefield the win in the series, having picked up a 9-6 win in Friday's opener.

UPike is now 13-16 on the season, 8-10 in the AAC. The Bears are scheduled to visit Campbellsville on Tuesday for a nonconference game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The Rams are now 13-12, 8-7 in the league.

Bears 7, Rams 3: UPike broke open a 2-2 tie with four runs in the sixth to pull away for the win in the opener.

The Bears loaded the bases on a single by Francis Subero, an infield error off the bat of William Kelley and a walk to Cole Fowler. The Bears took the lead for good on a walk to Mason Melton.

Garren Gledhill's infield single made it 4-2, and Cam Revolt followed with one of his three doubles in the game to score two more.

Both teams scored in the eighth to set the final score.

Melton had two hits and scored four times in the win. Brooks had a hit and two RBIs while Kelley and Fowler had a hit each.

Caleb Morrison pitched five solid innings in relief to improve to 1-2.

Rams 3, Bears 2: A bases-loaded double by first baseman Nick Stergiou in the fifth was all Bluefield would need to win the finale of the three-game series.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh when UPike rallied for a pair.

Fowler reached on an error to get the inning started, and pinch hitter Tanner Gerosa doubled to right to get him around from first. One out later, Gledhill doubled to left-center to score Gerosa to make it 3-2.

Revolt drew a walk to put the winning run on base, but a lineout and flyout ended the game.

Josh Neilson (1-1) pitched the first 5-2/3 innings to get the win. He struck out four and allowed only three hits. Tyrone Woods took over from there for his sixth save of the season.

Shaye McTavish (2-5) went the distance for the Bears, striking out seven and allowing five hits. None of the runs he allowed were earned.
