GRAYSON, Ky. – First baseman
Austin Gurney continued his torrid pace this weekend with a grand slam and six RBI as the University of Pikeville completed the sweep of Kentucky Christian with an 18-4 win.
Â
The decision moved the Bears above .500 for the season at 11-10 and to break-even in the conference at 6-6.
Â
Gurney, a senior from Campbell River, B.C., was 3 for 5 on Saturday and went 5 for 13 with two homers and eight runs batted in during the three-game weekend series.
Â
Gurney drove in the first run of the game in the top of the first with a single to plate
Riley Paulino, who had reached on an error.
Â
UPike put the game away with nine runs in the second, during which Gurney nailed his grand slam. The Bears added seven more runs in the fifth inning as Gurney delivered another RBI single.
Â
Gurney had plenty of help, as Paulino had three RBI and scored three times, while
Cam Revolt drove in three and scored twice. Third baseman
Mason Melton scored three times and drove in two, while designated hitter
Tanner Gerosa had two hits and scored twice and right fielder
Cole Fowler had two hits and scored twice.
Â
Sophomore pitcher
Isaac Berry improved to 3-1 with the win, striking out five and scattering four hits over five innings.
Jonah Adkins threw the final two innings.
Â
UPike will be back in action on Tuesday in a non-conference affair when Campbellsville University comes to town. The action will begin at 3 p.m.
