Softball splits doubleheader at Brenau

GAINESVILLE, Ga. - University of Pikeville softball split a road doubleheader against the Brenau University Golden Tigers Friday afternoon.  

UPIKE is 13-20 overall and 6-12 in conference play following today's split with the Golden Tigers. The Bears are back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader agains Truett McConnell. First pitch for UPIKE and TMU is set for 1:00 p.m. 

Game 1: UPIKE 9, Brenau 6 

The Golden Tigers plated three runs in the bottom of the third, but the Bears countered with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth. Chloe Calton led off the inning with a single, then Maddie Horn reached via error. Maria McClellan got the Bears on the board with an RBI double to score Calton.  

With runners on second and third and no outs, Emma Muncy singled then advanced on an error and Horn scored. Kaden Dunlap tied the game with a sacrifice fly to score McClellan. Brenau retook the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Bears cut the Golden Tigers' lead in half in the fifth when Sam Case tapped the dish after Maddie Horn hit into a fielder's choice.  

Trailing 5-4 in the top of the sixth, the Bears went to work. With the bases loaded and two outs, Case hit a two-run double to take the lead. Calton followed up Case's two-run double with an RBI single, then Horn capped off the inning with a single to left that scored two more runs.  

Brenau would score one more run in the bottom of the sixth, but Brianna Johnsen shut the door on their comeback bid to give the Bears the win in game one.  

Game 2: Brenau 10, UPIKE 2 (5 innings) 

Just like they did in game one, the Golden Tigers struck first in game two. Brenau plated two runs in the bottom of the first and another three in the second. The Bears got two runs back in the top of the third.  

Kaden Dunlap led off with a single, then scored after Claudia Maness reached base via an errant throw. Maness scored two at-bats later after Addison Johnson belted a fastball to left field for an RBI double.  

The Golden Tigers plated another run in the third to go up 6-2, then put the game out of reach in the fourth after pushing four more runs across. The Bears went down in order in the top of the fifth and Brenau won the game via the run rule.
