PIKEVILLE, Ky. - University of Pikeville Bears baseball earned a 3-2 victory over the Georgetown College Tigers Tuesday afternoon at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the opening frame with a solo shot to left to go up 1-0. In the bottom of the second, the Bears countered. Austin Gurney and Garren Gledhill hit back-to-back singles to open the frame. With two on and no outs, Hunter Ferguson gave the Bears the lead with a two-run double to left.
Just like when these teams last met, the story in this game was errors. In the top of the fourth, the Tigers tied the game after making the Bears pay for committing an error. The Bears and the Tigers combined for six errors on the afternoon.
The Bears took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Cam Revolt reached base after being hit by a pitch. After a flyout by Noah Brooks, Revolt reached second after a wild pitch, then advanced to third after a throwing error by the pitcher. Austin Gurney then drew a two-out walk to put runners on the corners with two outs. Revolt would score during the next at-bat after a balk.
Richtter Castillo came checked into the game in the sixth inning and kept the Tigers off the scoreboard in innings six through eight. Georgetown had a runner on third and one out in the seventh, but Castillo sat two Tigers down on strikes to keep the score at 3-2.
Maquire Wakelyn was called upon the ninth to close out the game. Wakelyn had runners on the corners and two outs but came away with a save after grounding out the last Georgetown batter into a fielder's choice.
With Tuesday's win, the Bears record climbs to 23-19 (15-12 AAC). UPIKE has won three in a row and ten of their last eleven. Coach Cody Andreychuk's squad will travel to Pippa Passes, Ky., Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. game against the Alice Lloyd College Eagles.
