ATHENS, Tenn. - University of Pikeville softball were swept by Tennessee Wesleyan Friday afternoon.
The Bears drop to 14-25 (7-17 AAC) following Friday's losses. UPIKE will take the field again Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. road doubleheader against Bryan College.
Game 1: Tennessee Wesleyan 8, UPIKE 0 (6 innings)
Chloe Calton recorded the first hit of the game with a ground-rule double to left in the bottom of the second. However, a pair of strikeouts and a fly out left Calton stranded. The Bulldogs got their first hit of the game one frame later and scored.
Tennessee Wesleyan added another in the fourth, then blew the game open with a five-spot in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth, the Bears got some offense going with a leadoff single by Clara Blair. Rae-Leigh Purvis checked into the game as a courtesy runner and advanced to third two at-bats later after Sam Case doubled down the left field line. The Bears would come up empty again after a strikeout ended the frame.
Leading 7-0, the Bulldogs ended the game and the run-rule went into effect after a two-out single up the middle. TWU took game one by a final count of 8-0.
Game 2: Tennessee Wesleyan 5, UPIKE 4
UPIKE struck first in game two after taking advantage of a pair of TWU fielding errors. Case hit a one-out single and then advanced to second after a throwing error. Two at-bats later, Case scored after the Bulldogs committed another error in the outfield. TWU struck back with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
UPIKE took advantage of another fielding error in the sixth when Addison Johnson reached base via an error. Johnson stole second to get into scoring position, then scored after a double by Dani Crum. Crum then reached third after a sacrifice bunt by Case, then scored after an RBI single by McClellan. McClellan would tap the dish after back-to-back singles by Claudia Maness and Maddie Horn. After six innings, the Bears led 4-1.
The Bulldogs battled back and in the bottom of the seventh. A leadoff triple, back-to-back singles, and a three-run home run gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 win and a sweep of the series.
