PIKEVILLE, Ky. - University of Pikeville baseball swept a doubleheader against St. Andrews Saturday afternoon.
With the series sweep, UPIKE has won six in a row and are 19-18 (13-11 AAC) on the year. Coach Cody Andreychuk's team will take to the field again Tuesday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. matchup against the Alice Lloyd College Eagles at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
Game 1: UPIKE 15, St. Andrews 4 (7 innings)
The Bears opened the scoring with a three-spot in the bottom of the first. With two outs and runners on second and third, Austin Gurney put the Bears up 2-0 with a single to right. Garren Gledhill put the Bears up 3-0 with a single to left.
St. Andrews cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth, but the Bears were equal to the challenge in the bottom of the fourth. Francis Subero and Marques Richards drew walks, then Tanner Gerosa singled to right to make it 4-2. After the Knights walked in a run, the Bears made them pay for committing an error by tacking on another run. Austin Gurney capped off the scoring in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to right to score Mason Melton.
With one out, Francis Subero hit a solo home run to put UPIKE up 8-2. Richards wore a fastball then advanced to second after Gerosa singled to center. Two at-bats later, Riley Paulino doubled down the left field line to make it 9-2, then Austin Gurney tacked on two more with a single to left.
After the Knights put up a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, the Bears punched back with four more runs. Leading 11-4 with two on and one out, Gerosa recorded his third hit of the game with an RBI single to left. After the Knights walked in two more runs, Austin Gurney recorded his fifth RBI of the game after grounding out to second with the bases loaded. Dawson Schultz retired the Knights in order in the seventh and the Bears run-ruled SAU 15-4 to win the game and clinch the series.
On the mound, Kameron Brodeur pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and four strikeouts. Brodeur was credited with the win and improved to 4-1 on the season.
Game 2: UPIKE 4, St. Andrews 0
The Bears were held hitless for the first three innings before getting the bats going in the fourth. Cam Revolt recorded the Bears' first hit of the game with a single to right and then scored two at-bats later after a triple by Noah Brooks for the game's first run.
Brooks scored to make it 2-0 after Austin Gurney singled to center. Gledhill and Hunter Ferguson reached base via a hit by pitch and a walk, respectively, to load the bases before Subero added two more runs to UPIKE's lead with a single to right.
While the Bears had a big fourth inning, Shaye McTavish stole the show with his performance on the mound. McTavish picked up his third win of the season after pitching a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out eight.
