Softball splits Senior Day DH

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville and Columbia International (S.C.) University split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, with the Rams taking the opener 6-1 and the Bears bouncing back for a 1-0 win in the second game.

Pikeville (12-19, 5-11 in the AAC) will be back in action on Monday when it visits Bluefield (Va.) University for another league doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.

CIU is now 17-19 overall, 10-10 in league play.

Rams 6, Bears 1: Despite having nine hits, the Bears couldn't push a run across until the seventh, when shortstop Sam Case doubled to right field to score catcher Dani Crum, who led off the inning with an infield single.

Case and centerfielder Addison Johnson had three hits apiece. Crum had two, while right fielder Maddie Horn had a single.

Sara Bays (3-4) pitched all seven innings for the Bears.

Bears 1, Rams 0: The Bears plated the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, and combined that with the work of pitcher Chloe Bryant, who made her debut and went the distance, allowing only three hits and striking out three.

In the fourth, the action began with a two-out triple by first baseman Chloe Calton. A walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases before Johnson singled to left field to score Calton.

Johnson had more hits and a sacrifice bunt in the win, giving her six hits in seven at bats on the day.

Left fielder Maria McClellan had a double, while Crum, Case and designated player Harlee Quick all had a hit.
